A video dating back more than a dozen years has emerged to show Matt Petgrave committing the same illegal act that killed Adam Johnson last Saturday.
During an Elite Ice Hockey League game in England, Johnson was killed when Petgrave’s skate sliced his throat following a collision. His death on October 28 is still under investigation by South Yorkshire Police.
Now, X user @WallStreetSilv is accusing Petgrave of deliberately extending his leg during the collision in an attempt to 'take out’ Johnson – and to prove it, the popular social media account has shared old footage of a similar incident. The clip shows Petgrave throwing his left elbow and right back leg at an opposing player, spinning him in the air and hitting Ice first in the neck and upper back.
The incident appears to have occurred during Petgrave’s first season in the Ontario Hockey League, when he played for the Niagara Ice Dogs. Both players involved appear to walk away from the clash unscathed.
This video would be from 2009 or 2010, illustrating the quality of the grain, but the jersey no. The player wearing 26 is said to be Petgrave.
Petgrave was ranked No. 1 for the Niagara Ice Dogs during the 2009–10 season on the Canadian Hockey League’s official website. Listed as wearing 26.
A clip can be identified in OHL based on the graphic displayed during replay.
Both teams playing in the game can also be identified as the Ice Dogs and the now defunct Plymouth Whalers based on Live Shot’s score.

Neither Czarnik nor Petgrave have played in the NHL.

Local police in England released a statement on Tuesday saying, „Due to the complexity of this tragic and unprecedented incident, a wider investigation will take some time.”
An OHL hit above would have called for a knee penalty in the NHL. No discipline is given in the above video.
In the NHL, a knee violation can range from a 2-minute penalty to an ejection with a possible suspension. Based on the severity of the contact in the video that allegedly involved Petgrave, he could serve a multi-game suspension.
After Johnson’s death, the English Ice Hockey Association, which oversees English and Welsh hockey below the level Petgrave and Johnson played, announced a neck protection mandate starting in 2024.
