Indian-origin diplomat Kamala Shirin Lakhtir has been appointed by President Joe Biden as the US ambassador to Indonesia. Lakhdir has served in the State Department for nearly 30 years, serving in the senior Foreign Service, at the minister-counselor level, and most recently as the State Department’s executive secretary, the White House said.
His father, Noor, migrated to America from Mumbai to attend the University of California, Berkeley in the 1940s. A graduate of Harvard and an MS from the National War College, Lakhdir served as Ambassador to Malaysia from 2017 to 2021.
Prior to that, Lakhdir served as the US Consul General in Belfast, Northern Ireland from 2009 to 2011. He joined the State Service in 1991 and served as director of the Office of Maritime Southeast Asian Affairs, which included responsibility for U.S. relations with Indonesia. Earlier in his career, he was Deputy Coordinator of the Taiwan Coordination Staff of the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs. His other foreign assignments include China, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia, the statement added.
Lakhdir grew up in Westport, Connecticut, and was inspired by his parents to pursue an international career, he said in an interview published at the National Museum of American Diplomacy.
