Some tourist destinations receive tons of hype but fail to live up to expectations. But every once in a while, one of these world-famous „traps” will completely stun you. Hence the Redditor u/ottyoshi7 He asked, „What?” Tourist places Overrated?” Here are the absolute must-visit sites, according to Redditors and members of the BuzzFeed community.
1.
„Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy, France. It seems to be the home of a particularly prolific wizard.”
2.
„Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an, China. You approach a very unimpressive and low-key entrance, but you turn a corner and it’s jaw-dropping.”
3.
„The Smithsonian museums in DC at The Capitol Building. They’re all free and range from very good to world-class spectacular.”
4.
„The Walk of the Gods on the Amalfi Coast. It’s absolutely incredible, and the views you get from there are some of the best in the world.”
5.
„The Alhambra in Granada, Spain is incredible…especially if you can see it at night.”
6.
„Machu Picchu. The deathtrap stairs to the top of Huayna Picchu are impressive if you dare. The landscape and ruins are absolutely stunning.”
7.
„Angor Wat itself is amazing, but basically it’s the whole city of ruins, walls and man-made lakes. It’s wild. It’s the best place I’ve ever visited, and I’ve been to quite a few.”
8.
„The Louvre in Paris has a well-deserved reputation. There’s art that no one talks about. When I went there, I spent hours looking at the sculptures, and I couldn’t even spend time looking at any of the paintings.”
9.
„Redwood National Park. You can’t truly appreciate the size of these trees until you stand next to them, watching the wrinkles in the bark wider than your body, the sap popping and creaking. It hits you all at once, and you feel small.
10.
„As a Floridian, going to Rockefeller Center in New York at Christmastime made me feel like I was in a movie. It was amazing.”
11.
„The Leaning Tower of Pisa. Really incredible to see and if you go late in the day, it’s not too crowded (at least not when I was there).”
12.
„Jemaa el-Fnaa is the main square in Marrakesh. I love the energy and the music here, and the food stalls are amazing!”
13.
„Times Square. I hate to tell people to skip this attraction. If you’ve never been to New York City, go to Times Square. Walk through it on your way to a Broadway show. Or go at midnight to watch the screens change. Sit on the stairs and see a piece of art by a local artist – Friday or Chili. Don’t go to eat, but it’s worth a stroll.
14.
„Moraine Lake in Banff National Park. Although a tourist trap, it’s the most beautiful place I’ve ever been.”
15.
„If you’re interested in Cold War history the Checkpoint Charlie Museum is fascinating. It’s huge, and every millimeter is covered in information. It’s expensive because it’s a private museum and clearly a labor of love. It’s a whole lot of information, but if you don’t want to read it’s very unusual. .
16.
„Milford Sound. In fact, the whole drive down to it from Queenstown, New Zealand is really something.”
17.
„The Cliffs of Moher. The first time I went, I was stunned. I thought, ’This cannot be true. It looks like a stock movie.’ I couldn’t fathom the enormity.”
18.
„The Duomo in Florence is amazing. I went before sunset when the crowds were gone and it was incredible.”
19.
„The Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. I was sick of seeing cathedrals on my Eurotrip and I wasn’t even excited to see it. But wow, I could have stared at the outside for hours, and the interior was overwhelming. One of the best experiences I’ve ever had, and I can’t wait to go back.
20
„An architecture cruise in Chicago is a great time, and it offers something a little different from your typical tourist activity.”
21.
„Santorini. You look at pictures and think there’s no way an island could really be like that…but it really is.”
22.
„Niagara Falls. As a Brit, I’ve never seen such a huge body of water. I put on a giant blue towel to keep me dry and went on a boat next to the falls. I wasn’t dry, but I was amazed. .”
23.
„Going to the top of the Eiffel Tower is really impressive, especially at night. There are no skyscrapers nearby, so the height of the tower is really pronounced.”
24.
„The Vatican Museum, the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica are all definitely worth it. The art is incredible, and the scale of St. Peter’s is unreal.”
