Malaysia’s Economy and Climate Change

Malaysia Study Program & Climate Change in Southeast Asia Program

About the Hybrid seminar

Malaysia is trying to escape the upper middle income trap. The challenge of undertaking structural reforms that address economic growth concerns and align with climate action is considerable. Last year, the Anwar Ibrahim administration released the Madani Economic Framework, the National Energy Transition Roadmap, the mid-term review of the 12th Malaysia Plan, the new Industrial Master Plan 2030, and the Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap – all in quick succession. These new strategies aim to harness green growth opportunities to rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions while providing tangible economic benefits to people. In addition, the government must secure the necessary financial resources for the National Adaptation Plan, which seeks to strengthen Malaysia’s climate resilience in various sectors including health, agriculture and food security, forestry, biodiversity, water conservation, infrastructure and cities.

At the seminar, Malaysia’s Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, HE Nik Nazmi Bin Nik Ahmad, unveiled the plans and outlined Malaysia’s priorities and strategies, which will be critical to meeting its climate ambition.
