Janic Sinner reveals 'dream' ahead of ATP Tour return

Janic Sinner is preparing to play his first tournament since winning the Australian Open this week and the Italian has revealed his 'dream' of reaching the top of the rankings.

Sinner won his first Grand Slam title last month, coming from a two-set-love loss to Daniil Medvedev in the Australian Open final.

The 22-year-old was scheduled to return to action in Marseille last week, but instead postponed his return to the ATP 500 indoor hard court event in Rotterdam.

Speaking to reporters in the Netherlands, Chinnar was asked if becoming the world No.1 was his goal, saying, “We'll see. I don't want to talk about rankings. Am I just trying to be happy on the court and improve as a player?

„That's the only thing I can control. And then the rest you can't control. So I'm happy to be there [ranked] Four this time. Of course, my dream is to be on top of the world and I will work as hard as possible.

Sinner is currently ranked No. 4, the highest-ranked Italian male player in history, along with 1976 Roland Garros winner Adriano Panatta.

The Davis Cup champion can only get to 200 points in Rotterdam this week as he defends runner-up points from his loss to the aforementioned Medvedev in last year's final.

In a first-round rematch from the Australian Open, Sinner will open her campaign against home favorite Botic Van de Zandschulp.

Inside the basement…

All eyes will be on Jannik Sinner in Rotterdam this week, with the Italian almost expected to continue his momentum from the Australian Open. It will be interesting to see how the 22-year-old copes with this expectation, especially in a tricky opener against someone with the crowd behind. As for his dream of one day becoming the world No. 1, it seems a real possibility that this dream will come true if he continues in the same form over the next few years.
