Foreign elections fall under the authority of KPUs: Minister of Foreign Affairs

JAKARTA (ANTARA) – The implementation of the 2024 elections abroad is entirely under the authority of the Public Elections Commission (KPU), Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi stressed.

Marsudi noted that his party had no power or role in organizing foreign elections.

„Don't get involved. (Foreign elections) is not the embassy's job. Foreign elections mirror elections in Indonesia. It's all the same, only happened overseas,” he noted on Wednesday.

After 156 votes were cast at a polling station (TBS) in Pesona Kayangan Debok, West Java, the Minister said that Section 1, Paragraph 13 of Act No. 7 2017 on Elections, the Overseas Election Committee (BPLN) was created. KPU to conduct elections abroad.

„Therefore, no party other than the KPU has the power to manage the electoral process, including overseas elections where the PPLN is represented,” he noted.

However, Marsudi said Indonesian embassies abroad would support the implementation of the election if necessary, such as allowing polls to be held in Indonesian embassies.

„There are many countries where there is not a large number of Indonesians. Elections can be held at the Indonesian Embassy,” he noted.

However, the minister noted that if the number of Indonesian citizens voting in a country like Malaysia is very large, the PPLN should look for a more spacious location outside the Indonesian embassy compound.

The 2024 elections are held to elect president and vice president, members of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Regional Representative Council (DPD), and Regional Legislative Councils (DPRD) at the provincial, city, and district levels. Nationwide Permanent Electoral Roll (DPT) with 204,807,222 voters.

Voting for the 2024 general elections will be held simultaneously on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, to elect the Assembly candidates and the President and Vice President.

The three pairs of presidential-vice presidential candidates contesting this year's election are Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar with official number 1; Prabowo Subianto-Kibron Ragabuming Raga, Official Number 2; and Kanchar Branovo-Mahfut MD, official number 3.

According to KPU Regulation No. 3 of 2022, the national rerun for the 2024 election is scheduled to take place from February 15 to March 20, 2024.
