Blinken supports efforts towards „mature” China-South Korea relations – S. Korea Ministry

SEOUL, June 17 (Reuters) – U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said he supports South Korea’s efforts to develop a „healthy and mature” cooperative relationship with China, South Korea’s foreign ministry said on Saturday.

Blinken, who arrived in Beijing on Sunday for a high-level visit by an official from President Joe Biden’s administration, held talks with South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin on Saturday about bilateral relations, relations between China and South Korea, and North Korea. The ministry said in a statement.

Blinken and Park strongly condemned what they consider North Korea’s continued provocations, and the ministry said the US, South Korea and Japan should continue to urge China to play a constructive role in the UN Security Council on denuclearization. The report was not detailed.

U.S. officials say Blinken’s visit to China, the first by a secretary of state in five years, is not expected to mark a turning point in how Washington and Beijing treat each other. Blinken said the trip on Friday was aimed at establishing „open and empowered” communication.
