Former England batsman Jonathan Trott's contract as head coach has been extended by a year following his success in the Afghanistan men's cricket team. His 18-month tenure ended in 2023, but the ACB has opted to retain him for 2024.
Afghanistan enjoyed impressive success on the field last year, culminating in their performance in the ODI World Cup where they defeated Pakistan, England, Sri Lanka and the Netherlands. They were on the verge of victory against eventual champions Australia until Glenn Maxwell played one of the greatest innings of all time.
Trott spoke to ESPNcricinfo after that campaign, which saw Afghanistan enter World Cup cricket with just one win. Bringing that number up to five At the end of the match. „I've thoroughly enjoyed my time with them so far,” he said. „It will be nice if we can build on the success we had in this World Cup.”
All in all, Drat, who was first appointed as Afghanistan's head coach in July 2022, has helped the team's success. Eight in 23 ODIsIncluding the first series win against Bangladesh 11 in 26 T20 matchesIncluding the first series win against Pakistan.
Afghanistan are currently playing a three-match T20I series against UAE where the scoreline is 1-1. They will play India in a three-match T20I series in January to prepare for the T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA in June.
Trott had a storied time with England, particularly in Test cricket where he scored 3835 runs in 52 matches and was one of the pillars of their Ashes triumph in 2010-11. A player at his peak capable of batting for a long time and building an enormous innings, Trott's success translated well into ODI cricket as well, where he scored 2819 runs at an average of 51 with four centuries and 22 fifties. Towards the end of his career, the intensity of his game took a toll on him and he required a break from cricket in 2013–14. Trott eventually retired from England duty in 2015. The Afghanistan stint will be his first stint as head coach of the senior men's team in international cricket.
