A growing number of governments are considering SSE as a promising means of achieving the SDGs. By operating in almost all economic sectors and integrating social, economic and environmental objectives, SSE companies can contribute to all 17 SDGs. Their actual contribution to any SDGs depends on a series of factors such as their specific characteristics and the socio-economic and environmental environment in which they operate.
More importantly, however, it depends on the existence of national policies that actively support and promote SSE as a model for sustainable economic and social development. In April 2023, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution encouraging Member States to promote and implement such national policies, precisely so that SSE enterprises can fully contribute to the social, economic and environmental pillars of sustainable development.
In this context, trade policy can play an important role in supporting SSE firms across the value chain, and governments have a variety of policies they can choose from. These include providing financial incentives, facilitating access to public funding and integrating SSE considerations into their public procurement systems.
This session will bring together SSE actors, researchers and relevant agencies of the UN Development Organization to start a dialogue on how to use trade policy to ensure that SSEs can fully contribute to the sustainability agenda.
