It’s no secret that many of our dogs love to sleep. Mostly, they enjoy napping and walking as much as playing.
But when a dog has a new home, whether it’s a rescue dog or a puppy, and it’s the first time away from their mother and littermates, they may not find it easy to sleep. For whatever reason, they may be a bit anxious or unsure about going to sleep.

First, Glazebrook explains in her post, it’s best to make sure your new dog is somewhere comfortable, like a bed or sofa, at times when you know they’re tired, but they’re not too sure or anxious to go to sleep.
„Put your hand on their chest so they can see it, smell it, know where it is,” Glazebrook says in the recording. „If they’re OK with it and not trying to get away from it, then take the next steps.”
Move your hand gently in downward, circular motions, but don’t shake your dog’s fur or press too hard. When they start to fall asleep, keep your hand there – but you can stop moving it. Once your puppy falls asleep, it’s a good idea to gently remove your hand, but don’t let go.
when Boarding a rescue dog at night, “You have to sit and stay close,” explains Glazebrook. “So, if your dog opens their eyes, they can see you’re still there. Don’t try to do it and run away. It defeats the whole purpose of helping an insecure dog feel safe.”
While this may seem like a lot of work, it’s important to remember that it’s not something you’ll be doing all the time. As Glazebrook says, “Communication is key as we try to resolve, reassure and provide security”.
