Africa is an incredibly diverse continent with a large population and here are some interesting facts about it
Africa is actually the second largest continent on earth and has a significant population, made up of more than 50 countries, with many languages, dialects and ethnicities. The continent covers an area of 30 million square kilometers and is home to many iconic and endangered species.
The most spoken language in Africa is not English, French, or the most indigenous African language, but in fact Arabic. Arabic is spoken by about 170 million people in the Maghreb region of Africa, which includes countries such as Morocco, Tunisia and Libya.
When you think of windmills you might picture the Netherlands or Santorini, but does South Africa come to mind? Probably not, although there are about 280,000 wind farms across the country.
Africa is huge as you know it and can lay claim to being the second largest continent on the planet with 54 countries and a population of over 1.2 billion – second only to Asia, impressive!
The Nile is a well and a very important river in antiquity, especially in ancient Egypt, providing water and transportation routes for civilizations. It is the longest river in the world and flows through many countries and is still a major source of water to this day, including: Egypt, Sudan, Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Standing at a height of 5,895 meters (19,341 ft), Mount Kilimanjaro is a majestic and iconic mountain – the highest mountain in Africa, but also the highest free-standing mountain in the world.
It is estimated that Africa is home to 20% of the species on Earth, including some endangered species such as the white rhinoceros, African wild dog, bonobo and more. The continent is home to some unique animals like elephants (largest land animal) and cheetah (fastest land animal).
Many countries in Africa are very diverse and have different ethnicities, tribes and languages – Nigeria has around 500 spoken languages, meanwhile South Africa has 11 official languages and Zimbabwe has 16.
