As access to space continues to expand and humanity prepares to return to the moon, private companies are laying the groundwork for a new economy in space to establish a permanent presence off Earth.
The Economist is launching its first Space Economy Summit to help highlight the new opportunities a space-based economy presents. The event will be held October 11-12 in Los Angeles, California and can be attended in person or virtually.
Some of the topics discussed at the summit include sustainability of space travel and space debris mitigation, on-orbit manufacturing, Earth observation, and long-term space commercialization and exploration. „While space has always captured the imagination, its commercial, social and environmental potential is now more tangible than ever,” a press release points out. „As the space industry continues to advance, the Space Economy Summit will highlight the vast opportunities it enables across a variety of sectors.”

More than 100 speakers from the space industry and beyond will share their ideas for the new global economy in 60 sessions at the summit. Speakers: Peter Beck, President and CEO of Rocket Lab; Dr. Larry Leshin, Director of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory; Sir Martin Rees, Astronomer Royal of the United Kingdom; US Space Command Lt. Gen. John E. Shaw; and Dylan Taylor, President and CEO of Voyager Space.
The summit aims to help leaders in the commercial and government space sectors share ideas that can move the emerging new global economy forward.
„Today, space is everybody’s business. The industry’s rapid expansion offers tremendous opportunities for collaboration across sectors,” Helen Bonsport, head of business, technology and industry events programming at The Economist, said in a news release. „We’re excited that the Space Economy Summit will facilitate important conversations about realizing the full potential of the new space. Speakers and attendees will leave with actionable ideas to help accelerate innovation in the space economy.”
