Craig Erwin is back to lead Zimbabwe in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, but veteran all-rounder Sean Williams will miss the tour, which includes three T20Is. Williams suffered the injury in the second T20I in Harare last month. Erwin was left out of both teams due to a groin problem in the home series against Ireland.

Unbeaten offspinner Thabiwa Mufutza has been called up to the ODI squad after a strong domestic performance. The 33-year-old Mufutza took 18 wickets, the most in Mashonaland Eagles' title win at the 2023 Pro50 Championship. Fast-bowling all-rounder Faraz Akram, who was called up for the Ireland ODIs but did not play, is in line to make his debut in the format.

Dakutswanashe Kaidano, Tinashe Kamunhugamwe, Milton Shumba and Tony Munyonga, who were part of the seven new faces against Ireland, have retained their places for the ODIs in Sri Lanka. However, all-rounder Brian Bennett, who made his T20I debut against Ireland – Ainslie Ndlove and Carl Mumba will be in the T20I squad led by Sikandar Raza, along with Khaidano, Mufutsa and Akram.

All-rounder Wesley Mathewere, who was suspended by Zimbabwe Cricket for an anti-doping violation, was left out of the squad.

Zimbabwe had a year to forget in 2023 after a poor run in two World Cup qualifiers. They first failed to make the cut for the ODI World Cup in India, failing to make the top two of the qualifiers they hosted. They also missed out on a ticket to this year's 20-team T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the United States, after losing to Namibia and Uganda in the Africa regional qualifiers.
