Minister says community forestry improves village economy

JAKARTA (Antara) – Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar said that community forests not only have an impact on environmental protection but also improve the welfare of rural communities.

„In 2023, the economic transactions of community forestry business groups (KUPS) we registered through the GoKUPS information system reached Rp1.13 trillion, or about 102 percent of the target,” he said in a discussion on community forestry, which is monitored online. Thursday.

With this achievement, he revealed that the government aims to reach Rp1.5 trillion (about US$90.94 million) by 2024 through KUPS.

The increase in benefits provided by KUPS also has an impact on villages in the surrounding community forests.

Bakkar explained that this is evident from the increase in Village Development Index (IDM) in villages that have permission to manage forests sustainably.

He further explained that under IDM, the number of most backward villages has decreased from 2,193 villages in 2016 to 189 villages in 2023.

„For independent villages, the number has increased to 1,803 villages from 33 villages in 2016,” he said.

On the ecological aspect, community forestry players are being asked to play a role in efforts to tackle biodiversity loss and mitigate climate change.

„Community forestry groups should use local wisdom and knowledge to adapt and mitigate climate change to prevent greenhouse gas emissions, preserve and protect biodiversity, plant trees on critical or open lands, and prevent environmental pollution in community forest areas,” he said. Mentioned.

According to the Ministry, community management access through the Community Forestry Program has reached 7,087,970 hectares managed by 1.3 million households.
