Margot Robbie responds to 'Barbie' Oscar snub for best actress: No regrets

Margot Robbie didn't let the best actress Oscars break her heart when it came to „Barbie,” which still pulled in eight Academy Award nominations this year. Robbie was nominated for Best Picture in 2024 for producing the blockbuster comedy. She recently joined her „Barbie” side for a SAG-AFTRA discussion, in which she was asked about the Best Actress Oscar snub and the outrage that followed.

„There's no way to be upset when you know you're this blessed,” Robbie said of the snub, while adding that it was a bit sad that Greta Gerwig wasn't included in the Best Director race.

„Obviously, I think Greta should be nominated as a director,” he said. “What she did was a once-in-a-lifetime, once-in-a-lifetime thing. What she pulled, it really was. But it's been an incredible year for all films.

Regardless, Robbie said he was „beyond thrilled” by the film's eight Oscar nominations, which include two noms for best picture, adapted screenplay, supporting actor for Ryan Gosling, supporting actress for America Ferrera, costume design, production design and original song.

„It's incredible and a great film for everyone to get the hits they've got.” Robbie said, then added: „We set out to do something that would change the culture, affect the culture, have some kind of impact. It has already done that and some, more than we ever dreamed. That's the biggest reward that can come out of all of this.

„People's reactions to the film have been the biggest reward of this whole experience,” he continued. „Whether it's seeing what people are writing online, or seeing how much pink I can see in this room right now…I've never been a part of anything like this. Not like this. I've done comic book stuff and it gets a great reaction, but this is so „It was weird. It still feels weird. I can't think of a time when a movie has had this effect on culture. And to be in the eye of the storm is amazing.”

Robbie and Gerwig's joint Oscar snubs sparked controversy following the announcement of this year's Academy Award nominations. Their nominated co-stars, Gosling and Ferrera, separately addressed the snaps and both expressed disappointment with the Academy.

„What Margot has achieved as an actress is truly incredible,” Ferreira said Variety. „One thing about Margot as an actress is how easy she makes everything look. People might be fooled into thinking the job is easy, but Margot is a magician in front of the screen as an actress…in my book, she's a master.

Gosling added, “No Ken without Barbie, and no 'Barbie' movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two men most responsible for this history-making, universally celebrated film. No one gets recognition in the film without talent, skill and genius. To say I'm disappointed they weren't nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.

Robbie is nominated for Best Actress at the upcoming SAG Awards, where the cast is up for the evening prize of Best Ensemble in a Motion Picture.
