Joss Stone and Dave Stewart have written the music behind Audrey Niffenegger’s new stage adaptation of the best-selling novel The Time Traveler’s Wife.
Stewart, a guitarist who sold more than 100 million records during his time in Eurythmics, co-wrote the songs for the new music with his Nashville neighbor and Grammy Award-winning singer.
Speaking to Sky News ahead of the opening at the Apollo Theatre LondonStewart said approaching the subject of time travel was initially worrisome.
„I was concerned about the periods of music,” he said. „My responsibilities are trying to combine Jazz Stone and music with songs that manage to inspire the story, but at the same time have the most infectious lyrics and melodies.”
Since the original book was published in 2003, it has been read by millions and turned into a TV drama and movie.
Most people know the plot – a man develops a rare genetic disorder that causes him to time travel and meet his soul mate for the rest of her life.
Adapted for the stage by playwright Lauren Gunderson, the complex love story then transcends time — a challenge for director Bill Buckhurst.
„It’s an integral part of the story, and we’re very fortunate to work with some really brilliant people on this show, an amazing illusion director, Chris Fisher, who I’ve worked with for a few years working on that illusion. The stage for the audience,” he said.

It meant learning a different way of working for Stone, who said writing multiple emotions into a single song to tell a complex love story was new.
She said: „Usually I write a song about a feeling, and if I write a love song, it’s a love song from beginning, middle and end. I don’t usually write like this.”
As in the HBO television series, the protagonist arrives at the next location unclothed in the stage adaptation as he jumps through time. But Stone and Buckhurst say it’s suitable for all ages.
„There’s a bit of nudity going on, but it’s a family show, so it’s done very tastefully,” Buckhurst told Sky News.
„There’s no bum,” Stone adds with a laugh.
The Time Traveler’s Wife is at the Apollo Theater in London until March 30.
