Jokowi highlights Gaza conditions at APEC economic leaders’ retreat

JAKARTA (Andara) – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) at the APEC Economic Leaders’ Retreat drew attention to the conditions in the Gaza Strip because people’s rights are not being respected, let alone the rights to development.

„Before embarking on the topic of inclusive development, let us think for a moment about the people of Gaza. Their right to life, let alone development, is currently not being respected,” the President said in a press release here on Saturday.

Jokowi was speaking at the APEC Economic Leaders’ Retreat in San Francisco on Friday (November 17).

President Jokowi therefore urged APEC leaders to take action to end the war, call for a ceasefire and ensure the smooth delivery of humanitarian aid to the people in Gaza.

On inclusive development, Jokowi said APEC must realize opportunities and prioritize inclusive and resilient economic growth.

President Jokowi asserted that the Asia Pacific region has great potential as APEC countries account for 62 percent of global GDP and 48 percent of world trade.

„Amidst an uncertain global environment, APEC must realize opportunities and prioritize inclusive and resilient economic growth,” he said.

To achieve this, President Jokowi underlined the need for cooperation. He said unity and strategic confidence are essential to realize the APEC 2040 vision.

„This is important to maintain APEC’s relevance as the premier economic forum in the region,” he explained.

The Head of State underlined the need to strengthen the region’s economic resilience in maintaining global supply chains.

Dependence and dominance of global supply chains must be reduced in many major economies, he stressed.

„Developing countries must play a role and participate in global supply chains, including downstream, to drive growth,” he noted.
