Italy Supports ASEAN Outlook on Indo-Pacific Region: Ambassador

JAKARTA (ANTARA) – Italy supports the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) to maintain stability and peace in the region, Italian Ambassador to Indonesia Benedetto Latteri said on Tuesday.

The region is strategic for trade, and Italy wants to be there to support stability and peace in the region, he told a press conference during a port call by ITS Francesco Morosini at Jakarta’s Tanjong Priok port on Tuesday.

The Italian warship will make a five-day port call to Jakarta from July 18-22, 2023 as part of a five-month deployment to the Indo-Pacific region.

Latteri said Italy wanted to „show our decision to maintain the status quo” in the Indo-Pacific region.

He added that the ship’s mission is to ensure stability and peace in the region, among others, in line with ASEAN’s position in the Indo-Pacific region.

Francesco Morosini is the latest high-tech Italian ship, Latteri said. It was commissioned into the Italian Navy in October last year and is currently on its first operational deployment.

Sailing since last April, it has stopped in Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Japan and South Korea before arriving in Indonesia. The ship will visit other ports before returning to Italy at the end of September.

Named after a soldier of the Republic of Venice who lived between 1619 and 1694, the ship was designed with enhanced dual-use features to perform military tasks including patrol, logistics transport and surface warfare and civil defense operations.

Morosini can reach speeds of up to 32 knots or 59.26 km per hour.
