Indonesia, USA to start Super Garuda Shield 2023 training

JAKARTA (ANTARA) – Indonesia, along with the United States and five other countries, will begin the Super Garuda Shield 2023 military exercise as a form of multilateral solidarity to protect a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

A number of military personnel from the United States, Indonesia, Japan, Australia, Singapore, the United Kingdom and France will participate in Super Garuda Shield 2023 from August 31 to September 13 at multiple training locations in Indonesia, the US Embassy in Jakarta noted. A statement on Tuesday.

Additional observer countries during the exercise include Brunei, Brazil, Canada, Germany, India, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, the Republic of Korea and Timor-Leste, according to the report.

„Super Garuda Shield 2023 builds on last year’s tremendous success,” said US Army Pacific Commander General Charles Flynn.

„This joint, multinational training exercise demonstrates our collective commitment and like-minded unity to allow for a stable, secure, and peaceful, free and open Indo-Pacific,” Flynn said.

The Super Garuda Shield is the largest military exchange between the United States and Indonesia held each year, and this year is expanding in the number of participating countries.

Approximately 2,100 US and 1,900 Indonesian TNI service members from multiple military branches will develop interoperable skills through training and cultural exchanges, the US Embassy said.

The exercise cements the vital US-Indonesia defense partnership and enhances cooperation in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

Through professional training and combat exercises taking place in Surabaya and Banyuwangi, Super Garuda Shield 2023 strengthens the US-Indonesian defense partnership through cooperative learning and improved trust between the two militaries, the embassy said in its statement.

The training includes expert educational exchanges and professional development workshops, command and control simulation, amphibious training, airborne operations, airfield seizure training and integrated joint field training culminating in a live fire event.

Meanwhile, command post training will focus on planning staff assignments in a combined military system. A field training exercise would involve brigade-strength elements from each nation, using war-fighting capabilities to improve interoperability and joint operational capability.
