India News | The Government collaborates with the Architecture Council to promote inclusion for people with disabilities


New Delhi, Mar 13 (PTI) The Center has collaborated with the Council of Architecture (COA) aimed at improving accessibility and inclusion of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in public spaces and buildings.

In a statement, the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) said it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with COA and joint workshops, seminars and training programs will be conducted under it.

These initiatives will incorporate compulsory course modules into the Bachelor of Architecture curriculum and raise awareness about creating accessible environments for people with disabilities.

As part of this partnership, COA and DEPwD recently completed a certified 'Training of Primary Trainers on Universal Access'.

The primary objective of this two-phase training program is to empower architects and academics to work as accessibility auditors in the built environment.

The first phase of the workshop took place online in September 2023 and the second phase was held on March 11-12. Participants are engaged in exercises including accessibility audit of buildings to improve practical skills and understanding.
