Bolivian Lowlands

This photo, taken by a crew member aboard the International Space Station, shows part of it Bolivian Yungas. The most forested ecosystems are in the lowlands of the Andes and the highlands of the Amazon rainforest.

The portion of the Beni River pictured here meanders through the lowlands and flows northeast. The Sinus River channel (brown) is juxtaposed against the vegetated floodplain (green). As it flows through lush, topographically complex terrain, the water carries a heavy load of sediment that accumulates in the river’s meanders. The transport and deposition of sediment erodes the river bank, creating the remnants of the main river channel. Oxbow Lakes.

Also pictured are several examples of „dependent lakes” also known as „Lagos Cuadrados” (Square Lakes) due to their rectangular shape. Lake Rocagua is one of the largest of dozens of lakes in central South America. The lakes, which are only a few meters deep, are oriented in the same direction, with their long axes oriented from northeast to southwest.

Some Scientists think This pattern is related to recent wind direction in South America The Geographical Past. At that time, the landscape was dry and vegetation was thin or absent, which allowed the wind to dig shallow depressions in the landscape. Later when the climate became wetter the ditches filled with water.

Astronaut photo ISS069-E-66 Purchased on March 28, 2023 with a Nikon D4 digital camera using a 56mm focal length. It is provided by the ISS Crew Earth Observation Facility and the Earth Sciences and Remote Sensing Unit, Johnson Space Center. Filmed by members The Expedition 69 crew. The image was cropped and enhanced to improve contrast, and lens artifacts were removed. The International Space Station Project in part supports the laboratory ISS National Laboratory Helping astronauts take pictures of Earth can be of great value to scientists and the public.
