It’s a World Cup rematch for the United States as they host Ghana in 2026 as a preview of what could be to come. The teams did not meet last winter in Qatar. This particular World Cup rematch was held in Germany in 2006. It has been in South Africa since 2010. It was from Brazil in 2014. It is one game since the last World Cup meeting between the USMND and Ghana, where the US won 2-1 in a friendly in Hartford in 2017. However, people remember the World Cup meetings. While this edition of USA vs. Ghana was merely a friendly, it took on more significance following the USA’s 3-1 loss to Germany on Saturday.
Berhalter’s boys were overtaken by the Germans
The USA has its biggest chance against Germany on Saturday. While the Germans are in freefall, it’s an American team that has the bulk of the key players. The USMNT squandered that opportunity. Things got off to a bright enough start. Christian Pulisic scored a stunning goal, his 27th for the United States, as the Americans took a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute. It was all downhill from there.
The goal seemed to wake the Germans from their slumber as Ilkay Gundogan buried the equalizer ten minutes later. The Germans added two more three minutes into the second half with assists from Niklas Fulkrug and Jamal Masiala. Much like Greg Berhalter’s team, the U.S. couldn’t threaten against a quality opponent. In fact, following Saturday’s loss to Germany, Gregg Berhalder now has two wins in eight games against European opposition: a win for Northern Ireland (played in an empty stadium due to COVID capacity restrictions) and a home win against Bosnia & Herzegovina. .
Preview: Ghana gives USMNT tough test
Ghana may be ranked 60th in the world right now, but it has been in good shape of late. The African team missed out on the 2018 World Cup but qualified for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. There they lost twice and won once. As a result, Ghana failed to progress from the group stage. Ghana performed well in 2023. It is in Group E of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with twelve points from six games. Although its most recent release, it was desirable. Mexico defeated Ghana 2-0 in Charlotte.
