LCD TVs have reached the peak of their development, which means they can’t perform any better and are being overtaken by OLED TVs, which still have a lot of room for growth. An article published on the Internet reveals just that Tom’s guide Compiling reports from some of the world’s leading television technology experts.
According to one of them, with contacts in the manufacturing industry, „I asked EMD (Merck KGaA and a major supplier of LC materials) what they are doing to push LC materials into displays…they make LC materials for displays and antennas, but significant growth of LC materials requires 'customer We were told 'No’.”
In other words, it seems that big consumer technology companies like Samsung, LG or Sony are not demanding improvements from LCD manufacturers, practically all of them are committed to OLED technology.
Differences between OLED and LCD
LED LCD screens use a backlight to illuminate the pixels, while OLED pixels actually generate their own light, meaning that the brightness of an OLED screen can be controlled on a pixel-by-pixel basis. This type of control is not possible with an LCD LED screen.
In cheap TVs and phones with LED LCD screens, lighting starts from the sides of the screen. The light from these LEDs passes through a matrix that creates red and blue and green pixels. So in LED LCD screens, the brightness level control by the screen is less and the blacks are not perfect.
LCD screens are cheap to manufacture, but offer poor picture quality and fit into widescreen TVs. OLEDs offer better quality, are more expensive and can be fitted into thinner TVs.
There’s always been a desire for LCD technology to evolve and improve, but as Tom’s Guide reveals, this evolution seems to be a pipe dream: LCD screens have reached their peak, which spells their death knell for the technology.
LG already stopped LCD production last year
Last year, one of the biggest TV manufacturers, LG It announced that it will stop making LCD screens. In this way, the historic manufacturer withdrew from a market that had dominated for many years. LG Display, a subsidiary of LG Electronics, has dismantled its LCD panel factories in China and Korea.
The reason? It is no longer profitable to manufacture these types of panels. The entry of Chinese manufacturers such as BOE forced the iconic Korean company out of the market due to significantly lower manufacturing costs compared to LG Display. LG Display is a subsidiary of LG Electronics.
Seeing production costs reach unaffordable levels, the Korean company decided to adapt the technology they used to make LCD screens for televisions. With this decision, the company intends to adapt its existing plants in China so that they continue to produce LCD panels, but in a smaller format and aimed at the automotive sector, phones, tablets and other markets.
What will happen to smart TVs with LCD technology?
What will happen to LG Smart LCD TVs? You can rest easy because the manufacturer will continue to sell LCD and OLED models. The only difference is that until now, LG Electronics used panels manufactured by LG Display, now they will bet on an outside supplier.
Currently, BOE is the world’s largest manufacturer of LCD screens, so it will definitely be this Chinese company that will supply LCD screens for LG Electronics’ list of smart TVs.
Of course, it seems that this technology does not have a long way to go in the medium term. So if you are thinking of buying a television, you should bet on OLED or Micro-LED screens.
