JAKARTA (ANTARA) – Indonesia has been elected as a member of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Executive Committee representing East Asia and the Pacific region for the period 2023-2027.
Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno, entering the UNWTO Executive Board shows that the world community trusts Indonesia to promote the revival of the tourism industry.
„I am grateful and moved by the trust placed in Indonesia,” UNO said in a statement on Tuesday.
He mentioned that Indonesia has got 16 votes in this election, surpassing China (15 votes), Japan (14), South Korea (12) and Thailand (11).
He added that Indonesia, along with China, Japan and South Korea, will represent the East Asia and Pacific region in the governing body.
Indonesia and other members of the East Asia and Pacific region will be responsible for developing UNWTO programs in the region, which will be reported to the organization’s General Assembly in October 2023, UNO said.
The Minister emphasized that Indonesia’s membership in the UNWTO Executive Committee will strengthen its role in national and global tourism development.
Last year, Indonesia celebrated World Tourism Day in Bali in conjunction with the G20 Tourism Working Group meeting.
With Indonesia’s new role in the UNWTO, Uno urged all stakeholders and citizens to unite for the advancement of the tourism sector.
„The world has given us (Indonesia) more recognition… We are promoting not only our tourism but also regional and global tourism,” he said.
