TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — The CEO of OpenAI announced Monday that he was pleased by the willingness of various governments to limit the risks posed by artificial intelligence that companies like his are developing.
CEO Sam Altman visited Tel Aviv as part of a world tour that took him to various European capitals. The tour was to promote his company, the inventor of ChatGPT, which created waves around the world.
„I’m very optimistic because I’ve been on this world tour, meeting world leaders,” Altman said during a visit with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, whose role was largely ceremonial. He added that he saw the „contemplation” and „urgency” of world leaders to find ways to „reduce these enormous risks”.
The world tour comes after several experts and scientists, including executives from Microsoft and Google, warned of the dangers artificial intelligence could pose to humanity. Altman was one of the signatories of the statement.
The emergence of a new generation of chatbots has raised fears that artificial intelligence systems will outperform humans. Countries around the world are scrambling to create rules for this new technology. The EU may pass legislation on artificial intelligence this year.
