Hockey in Motion – Artist Jackie Page brings art and sport together in Paris

With the Paris 2024 Olympic Games taking place in one of the world’s great art capitals, talented young filmmaker, multi-disciplinary artist and designer Jackie Page took the opportunity to showcase her latest work.

The New Zealander, who won the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) global competition to design medals for the Lausanne 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games, has strong links with the Olympic movement. At the opening ceremony he brilliantly recreated his own medal design using a hockey stick and a paintball.

During the first week of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Zakea held its 'Hockey in Motion’ exhibition in central Paris. Using a hockey stick and ball, he paints in virtual reality, using the movements of field hockey to create incredible digital sculptures, the hockey player and the Eiffel Tower are just two of many amazing examples.

The exhibition featured live VR performance painting, where visitors could immerse themselves in the artwork immediately after Zakia created it using virtual reality headsets.

Accepting Zakea’s kind invitation to a one-day exhibition, we caught up with him to learn more about his work and his deep passion for the ideals of the Olympic Games.

Hi Zakea, Thank you so much for inviting us to your exhibition and taking the time to talk to us. Could you please tell us about yourself?

Zakea page: “My name is Zakia Page. I am an artist, filmmaker and designer. Currently, I am in Paris during the Olympic Games for my solo exhibition 'Hockey in Motion’ about hockey and creating artworks using hockey movements. So it is sport and art and the relationship between sport and art, especially during the Olympic Games, the father of the Olympic Games (Pierre de Coubertin, a Parisian) expressed the importance of having both art and sport as a fundamental part. Olympic Games. It’s not just about the game, it’s about the host country, France. So we’re celebrating a bit of French culture. We also celebrate the host nation.

What is your connection to hockey?

ZP: “So I’m a former field hockey player. I played for about eight years. I played domestically for the Vietnam national team and played for local clubs in New Zealand such as Harbor City Hockey Club (in Wellington). It has been a great passion throughout my life. And it brought me so many happy memories and brought me into some wonderful communities. So, it was a very special part of my life.

Obviously, we’re in Paris for the Olympics. You’ve got an Olympic connection with the Youth Olympics. Could you please tell me a little more about it?

ZP: „My dream was to play hockey for New Zealand to win an Olympic medal, but gradually I started creating artwork and using field hockey in my performance work. My goal changed when I started focusing on the arts, and I wanted to use field hockey to create art for the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. More I had the opportunity to participate in the opening ceremony of the Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne 2020. And this is the medal I designed for the Lausanne 2020 Youth Olympic Games, which was created by American poet and civil rights activist Maya. Inspired by Angelo’s quote, he spoke about the importance of diversity, bringing together countries and people from different places, which is what the Olympic Games and Youth Olympic Games are all about.

Finally, you plan to visit the Yves-du-Manoir hockey stadium to watch the Paris 2024 Olympic hockey in the coming days. Are you excited?

ZP: „I’m really excited. I’ve never been to an Olympic field hockey tournament. I’ve been to the Youth Olympics, but not the big stage, so I’m looking forward to it. Also, it’s in a historic stadium, the same stadium that hosted the opening ceremony of the last Olympic Games in 1924. , so I’m looking forward to being there and being a part of it and checking it all out.
