JAKARTA (Antara) – The Indonesian government on Wednesday sent humanitarian aid worth Rp17 billion (about US$1.03 million) to victims of a landslide in Papua New Guinea’s Enga province (PNG) in May.
Crews from Jakarta’s Halim Pertanakusuma Air Base were loading at least three containers onto a Garuda Indonesia Airbus A330.
The humanitarian aid package includes essential items such as medical equipment, portable generators, solar cells, cooking utensils, blankets and sleeping bags.
„It’s been more than a month since the disaster, so the types of aid we’re sending have been adjusted accordingly,” Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendi said on July 1.
The devastating landslide claimed 670 lives and displaced more than 1,250 people. Disaster management efforts now focus on rehabilitation.
Effendi expressed hope that the assistance provided by the Indonesian government will ease the pain and burden of the victims and their families.
