Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace It brought in $14.5 million at the worldwide box office this weekend — the highest gross for a re-release of a film that’s a quarter-century old.
The film – released on Friday to celebrate its 25th anniversary Fourth of May, also known as Star Wars Day — grossed $8.1 million domestically, helping it to No. 2 at the box office. It was screened in 2,700 domestic theaters including 150 premium large format screens and 130 specialty motion D-Box/4D auditoriums.
In comparison, the 40th anniversary reissue of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi It opened in April of last year for $5.1 million.
The Phantom Menace Opened in 1999 and was an instant pop culture sensation.
The film – directed by Star Wars creator George Lucas and starring Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor and Natalie Portman – broke box office records and found new generations of fans as its popularity grew over the past two decades.
The film tells the origin of Anakin Skywalker, who would eventually become the evil Darth Vader. The sci-fi fantasy classic is filled with cinematic innovations, creative storytelling and iconic moments that are hallmarks of the Star Wars series.
