Cairo: A customs official said that 160,000 cars have been imported into the Saudi Arabian market in the last two years.
Total car imports to the kingdom reached 93,199 last year, up from 66,870 in 2022, added Hamud Al Harbi, spokesman for the Zakat, Taxation and Customs Authority.
Saudi news agency SPA reported that Japan, India, South Korea, the United States and Thailand have played key roles in supplying cars to the kingdom over the past two years, officials said.
Saudi Arabia’s car market is one of the largest in the world. The kingdom accounts for more than half of car sales among the six countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), according to SPA.
Car sales in Saudi Arabia totaled about 730,000 last year, with 30% bought by women, according to market watchers.
In 2018, the kingdom allowed women to drive for the first time in its history, part of massive changes in the country after a decades-long ban on women driving. This historic move has boosted the growth of the Saudi car market.
The kingdom saw a strong drive to empower women by involving them in public life and giving them leading positions in various fields.
Demand for cars has surged in the kingdom, reversing two years of declines and disruptions in supply chains due to global pandemic restrictions. Car sales in the kingdom are expected to rise to 870,000 this year.
In September 2023, American electric vehicle manufacturer Lucid Group opened its first international manufacturing plant in the Saudi port city of Jeddah.
