Legacy' film next week; David Zaslav slams studio failures

During Friday's Q4 earnings call, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslau said James Gunn's „Superman: Legacy” will begin filming next week.

Gun posted by firsD Picture The entire cast posted on Instagram yesterday, “After the table read with the #Superman cast. Eve, Mr. Terrific, Superman/Clark, Otis, Lex, Producer Peter Safron, Jimmy, Metamorpho, Lois, Hawkgirl, Me, Guy, The Engineer all together for the first time! What a wonderful day.”

Zaslav was optimistic when delivering the „Superman” news, saying, „Basically, the studio isn't doing really well — we had some real struggles at the end of the year — but we're very optimistic about this year. It's given us a lot of upside in the next two years.”

Warner Bros. Discovery's CFO, Gunnar Wiedenfels, was outspoken on the call about soft superhero offerings last year.

„For the film, it will continue to be a successful business,” he said. „Last year was a great example of the biggest success in film studio history, and some real challenges across the industry on the superhero side.”

Wiedenfels specifically noted that two of the company's December offerings — „The Color Purple” and the superhero sequel „Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” — were underperforming.

Titled „Superman: Legacy,” starring David Kornsvedt, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, it is slated for release on July 11, 2025. Gunn is writing and directing the film. The first in the „Chapter One: Gods and Monsters” segment of the rebooted DC Universe, he co-created with producer Peter Safran. As of 2022, both are co-CEOs and co-chairs of DC Studios.
