Cassidy had already finished third in the season-opening Mexico City E-Prix and followed that up with a similar result at Round 2 yesterday from Daria, before hitting the front in time at Saturday's meeting and staying there amid the pressure. Rolland moved off the line but it was three wide into Turn 1, Frijns getting the jump on the Nissan driver to steal P1 in the first corner.
After opening a cage five laps later, Rowland, Vandoorne and Hughes were the first to jump on the two mandatory 50kW Attack Mode boosts – Rowland losing second on the track. Leader Frijns took a two-minute attack mode on the next lap and held off the Nissan driver to retain the lead. Rowland wasted no time in taking his second 50kW boost and went on to his second six-minute activation once his first two-minute dose had expired, taking third place. Through it all, Cassidy managed to hit the ground running.
Out-front, Cassidy jumped through the activation zone on lap 8. Frijns finished second, with Roland third and Vandoorne, Hughes and rookie Daruvala rounding out the top six.
On Lap 10, a little further back, Sam Bird (NEOM McLaren) moved from 12th to turn 18 at lights out with a textbook move on Sette Camara, ninth at Turn 18.
Cassidy looked strong with a lead of 1.6s, while Frijns complained of too much power being used as he tried to hang on to the leading Jaguar. By lap 12 the front two pulled five seconds on Rowland in third, but Cassidy still had to take his second attack mode activation.
Lap 13 saw the Kiwi take that final 50kW boost to take the lead as he drove 2.5 seconds on the friggins – the Envision Racing driver still complaining he had to use more power than he wanted to stay with the leader. Factory Jaguar.
After qualifying 13th and 14th respectively in the pack, Evans and Dennis only gained a spot on lap 15, with back-to-back moves by Sed Camara at Turn 18 and the final corner.
Regardless of that early push, field leader Cassidy's advantage quietly dwindled, and by lap 17 Frijns' Jaguar was right on, troubling him for the lead while whipping some usable energy back into the I-TYPE 6's slipstream. .
A battle between seventh-placed Bird and eighth-placed Wehrlein went the German's way as Bird tracked Fenestrus' sixth. An aggressive move at Turn 18 saw the NEOM McLaren driver battle oversteer to lose ground and lose his position to the TAG Heuer Porsche waiting in the wings. From there, it took a turn for the worse – Brit Bird crashed into the wall, ending his race prematurely.
Wehrlein made further progress as he chased down Wehrlein for seventh place on the net – made easy by the DS Penske driver at Turn 1. Good stuff from the leader of the pre-race standings, he started 10th.
By lap 25, it was nose-to-tail with the leaders, with Cassidy, Frijns, Rowland, Hughes, Vandoorne and Fenestras only three seconds apart with 11 laps to run. From there, the top six battled to the finish, and only four seconds now separated the top 10 runners and 0.8 seconds between the then podium trio.
