Science and Technology for Sustainable Agricultural Production

Plant species must be genetically improved to respond to an increase in sustainable food production and a planet that contributes to food security.

Achieving sustainable production systems for fiber, food and energy requires a plant species and genetic improvement system capable of providing solutions to the challenges we face at the regional and global levels, in a timely manner.

Genetic improvement is a fundamental component for the sustainability of agro-industrial systems and socio-economic development of the country.

In particular, plant species must be genetically improved to respond to a planet that demands increases in sustainable food production and contributes to global food security. At the same time, mitigate climate change, use natural resources efficiently, protect the biodiversity of agro-ecosystems and minimize negative impacts on natural resources such as water, air and soil.

For decades, there has been a lack of legislation that has not encouraged the development of improved plant species. In order to create a renewed, dynamic and effective system that responds to local, regional and global demands, it is necessary to discuss the regulatory framework for the protection of new plant varieties (UPOV).

Today there is an opportunity to advance changes that will allow regulations to improve in this sense, with the hope of having better genetics that will benefit the country and all members of the agri-food community, especially agricultural producers.

At the same time, we see with concern that costs, taxes and DEX continue to fall on the manufacturer, which hinders access to technologies or has an adverse impact on the profitability and sustainability of production systems and manufacturers.
