Incheon International Airport, west of Seoul, is bustling with travelers ahead of the December 22 Christmas holiday.
The number of passengers traveling through Incheon International Airport rose to 77.9 percent of pre-pandemic levels this year, data showed Sunday.
A total of 49.97 million passengers flew through the airport west of Seoul in the first 11 months of 2023, representing 77.9 percent of the 64.17 million passengers during the same period in 2019, according to data compiled by the transport ministry.
About 56 million air passengers are expected to use the airport by the end of this year, or a recovery of 78.6 percent of the corresponding 2019 level, and Incheon International Airport is forecasting a full recovery next year.
Among major regional airports in Korea, which include Incheon Airport, Cheongju International Airport in North Chungcheong Province recorded a recovery rate of 89.3 percent with 420,618 passengers in the January-November period.
The number of passengers traveling through Gimpo International Airport in western Seoul was 2.88 million as of November this year, or 73.9 percent of 2019 levels, the data showed.
„Gimbo Airport is highly dependent on passengers from China, and routes to China have not fully recovered,” said a Korea Airports official. „The level is expected to rise to 75 percent by the end of the year.” (Yonhap)
