BERHAMPUR: At least 30 passengers on board a motorboat faced a harrowing experience on Sunday as it got stuck for several hours due to a technical glitch in its engine at Silica Lake near Satapada.
According to reports, a ferry ferrying passengers from Janhikuda to Sathapada ran aground in the lake.
Apart from passengers, it carried 80 two-wheelers and other goods. After some of the passengers on the ship recorded the plight and posted it on social media, local fishermen started rescuing the stranded passengers. District administration officials also came and helped evacuate the passengers safely.
Residents of around 92 villages near the lake rely on this route for their daily commute. They cross five kilometers through Silica Lake to reach the mainland, which puts their lives at risk, especially during storms and other mechanical problems.
This incident is the second such incident this year. Last month, Union Minister Parshottam Rupala's boat got stuck in Silica Lake for about two hours.
Recently, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) announced the construction of two bridges over Silica Lake without disturbing the marine habitat. Both the bridges will be signature bridges under the Bharatmala project.
