Tom Holland clarifies recent comments about taking a year off from acting following the brutal filming of his Apple TV+ crime thriller series “The Crowded Room.” The „Spider-Man” star announced his acting hiatus during an interview with „Extra,” while his new show received mostly negative reviews from TV critics. Holland said on „Live With Kelly and Mark.” that bad reviews had nothing to do with his decision to quit acting. The choice was made when she wrapped filming on „The Crowded Room” last year, meaning Holland was already months into her Hollywood hiatus.
„It’s a lot of fun. Obviously, 'The Crowded Room’ came out. We didn’t have very positive reviews,” Holland said. “So the press report is that I’ve taken this year off because of the criticism. But I am eight months into my annual leave. I’m chilling at home in London, going to the Grand Prix, playing golf…”
Hollande doubled down on negative „crowded room” reviews by praising his supporters. „We’re 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, so I want to thank my fans who watched the show and the people who watched the show,” he said. „I feel so grateful that I have such an amazing community of people who support me and are there for me, so I’m honored and very excited for other shows to come out.”
As of this article’s posting, “The Crowded Room” has a 91% fan score on Rotten Tomatoes, but a dismal 26% from critics. Variety Television critic Alison Herman called the series „sadly empty” in her review.
In „The Crowded Room,” Holland plays a young man who is arrested after a shooting at Rockefeller Center in New York City in the summer of 1979. Holland balanced acting and producing duties on „The Crowded Room” and told „Extra” that juggling both responsibilities while playing a character with a serious mental health struggle caused him to break down.
„I’m no stranger to hard work,” Holland said. “I lived by the idea that hard work is good work. Again, the show cracked me up. The time came when I needed a break and disappeared and went to Mexico for a week and spent time on the beach. I’m taking a year off now because of how hard this show has been. I’m excited to see how it turns out. I feel like our hard work has not gone in vain.
Once upon a time Interview with Entertainment Weekly Last month, Holland revealed that working on „The Crowded Room” led to a „little meltdown” in his personal life.
„I looked inside myself [the character], but in my personal life,” Holland said. „I had a bit of a meltdown at home and I thought, 'I’m going to shave my head. I have to shave my head because I want to get out of this character.’ It was unlike anything else.
Holland confirmed to EW that he has been sober for a year and four months. He credits the Apple TV+ series with changing his views on his own mental health. „The Crowded Room” is now streaming on Apple TV+.
