Colin Montgomery isn’t sure if last month’s US Open at Pinehurst will be Tiger Woods’ last.
„It may or may not be,” Montgomery said during a recent interview The Times of London.
In Montgomery’s view, it should be.
Montgomery, 61, has never won a major championship, but he has finished runner-up four times, once to Woods at the 2005 Open Championship at St. Andrews. Montgomery also fell to Woods in a playoff at the 2002 SAP Open, but in five meetings in Ryder Cup team play, Montgomery’s side took three matches against Woods and his partner. Montgomery has seen Woods at his best; This version of Woods is far from that, says an opinionated Scott.
Woods has missed the cut or withdrawn in eight of his 13 major starts since winning the 2019 Masters. He has played in only seven majors since severely injuring his right leg in a February 2021 car accident.
In his most recent major appearance, Woods beat Pinehurst No. 74-73. He was dismissed in two shots in the 2nd. Woods accepted a special invitation to play in that US Open, the first time he needed such an exemption.
Woods is committed to playing the Open at Royal Troon next week.
„I hope people will remember Tiger as Tiger, the passion and the charismatic aura around him,” Montgomery added. “All that is gone now. At Pinehurst, he didn’t seem to enjoy a shot, 'What’s he doing?’ He comes to Troon, and even there he will not enjoy it.
Montgomery was asked if it was time for Woods to retire.
„Aren’t we there?” Montgomery replied. „I thought we were over there. All athletes have a time to say goodbye, but it’s very difficult for Tiger to say it’s time to go. Obviously, he feels he can still win. We’re very realistic.
