Wyndham Clark Augusta's Magic and Studying Tiger Woods' Approach
Wyndham Clarke joins Active Sports to talk about the upcoming Masters and Tiger Woods' success over the years.
Augusta, Ga. – Tiger Woods made history again on Saturday 2024 MastersNot the positive kind.
A five-time Green Jacket winner He gave his worst performance yet His final stretch of 99 rounds at the Masters included a bogey-double-double-bogey, bogey-double-bogey, six-over 42 on the front nine at Augusta National Golf Club. His second nine wasn't much better as Woods shot a third-round 10-over 82, his highest score at the Masters. His previous worst score was his weekend 78 to close out the 2022 Masters, where he finished 47th out of 52 players.
On Saturday he left the course at 11 over for the tournament, tied for 52nd.
Woods was in control of his driver for the first two rounds, but lost the momentum he had with the big stick on Saturday. He sprinkled the ball all over the green earth, perfect for the image of Bobby Jones and Alastair McKenzie, and sprinkled in some shady chippings and put them over his round to forget the cherry.
„I didn't have a good warm-up session and carried that on all day today,” Woods said after his round. „Hit the ball everywhere I knew I shouldn't. And I missed a lot of putts. Easy, doable putts. I missed a lot of them.”
The weather must have been ideal for his surgically repaired body, held together by pins and screws, but fatigue quickly set in and his game quickly petered out. After his round, Woods said a 23-hole day cut on Friday didn't wear him down.
„I wouldn't say mental reps. It's just that I didn't play very competitively,” he said of what went wrong. „When I had opportunities to flip it, when I made that putt on 5, I immediately putt a 6 and flopped a chip. 7 went the wrong way, and when I had opportunities to flip it, I didn't.”
Despite his miserable walk around Augusta National on Saturday, Woods didn't quit. He values competition and discipline too much, and is too proud to walk away with his tail between his legs when he's done poorly. Woods will undergo treatment Saturday night and Sunday morning, and if he feels well enough to play, he'll be back out on Sunday for his 100th round at his favorite course.
„My team will prepare me,” he said of his chances of playing on Sunday. „It's a long night and a long warm-up session, but we'll be ready.”
