The 2024 Women’s Asian Indoor Cup came to a close yesterday as Thailand clinched the title following a stunning 6-2 win over Kazakhstan, securing their place at the 2025 FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup 2025. Poreč, Croatia from 3-9 February 2025.
2024 Women’s Indoor Asia Cup 2024 was held in Chonburi, Thailand from 13 to 16 May 2024 with 9 teams competing. Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Iran, Oman and Vietnam were drawn in Pool A, while Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia and Singapore were in Pool B. .
Kazakhstan, 6-time winners of the tournament, dominated Pool A, winning all their matches, while Malaysia finished second and qualified for the semi-finals. Pool B saw Thailand, winners of the previous edition of the tournament, top the table with 3 straight wins, while Indonesia finished second in the pool and qualified for the semi-finals.
In the first semi-final, Kazakhstan faced a tough challenge from Indonesia, with the match tied at 3-goals apiece at the end of regulation time. But Kazakhstan’s championship pedigree came in handy as they cruised past their opponents in shoot-outs to reach the final. Defending champions Thailand overcame a tough test from Malaysia to reach the final with a 2-1 win in the second semi-final.
With only one place up for grabs at the FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup 2025, the final was a winner-takes-all contest not just for the title and gold medal, but for a spot at next year’s World Cup. While most fans expected a close-fought affair between the two top teams in the tournament, the final unfolded very differently. Dominating in attack and impervious to defence, Thailand cruised to a huge 6-2 victory to clinch their second straight Women’s Indoor Asia Cup title and qualify for their first ever FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup!
