George Camposos will meet Maxie Hughes in a lightweight bout in Shawnee, Oklahoma in July, sources told ESPN.
The former undisputed lightweight champion is now top ranked after agreeing to a new multi-year, co-promotional deal with Lou DiBella, and Hughes will headline an ESPN card against the fight, sources said.
Sources said Camposos will not fight in his home country due to promoter Matt Rose’s exclusive pay-per-view rights to fights in Australia.
Camposos (22-2, 10 KOs) returned to Australia as a star after defeating Teofimo Lopez in New York to capture the undisputed lightweight championship in ESPN’s 2021 Upset of the Year.
The 29-year-old returned decisions to Devin Haney in Australia and will now be looking for his first win since the Lopez bout.
Camposos is ranked No. 5 by ESPN at lightweight, and a win should put him one step closer to another title shot.
Hughes (26-5-2, 5 KOs) is coming off the best win of his career, a majority decision win over former featherweight titleholder Kid Calahat in September.
The 33-year-old from England has lost seven straight since losing to Liam Walsh in 2020, including a points victory over Jono Carroll.
The top-ranked added another lightweight on Thursday with the signing of Jaime Ortiz, who provided a tougher-than-expected challenge to Vasily Lomachenko in October.
Top Rank will promote the undisputed bantamweight championship match between Devin Haney and Vasily Lomachenko on ESPN+ pay-per-view on May 20 in Las Vegas. The company is promoting top lightweight Shakur Stevenson.
