Mauricio Pochettino has explained why Thiago Silva was not appointed Chelsea’s permanent captain despite being widely regarded as one of football’s most influential leaders on and off the pitch.
The Blues have appointed Cobham graduate Reece James as the club’s new captain following the departure of Chelsea legend Cesar Azpilicueta this summer.
There were a number of candidates to replace the Spaniard, with Reece James, Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva in contention for the armband. But Pochettino says all three will captain the Blues at some point this season.
’Our first conversation was very good. I explained my ideas and plan, he agrees and asked for ideas. He was truly humble. I said to him, „Look Diego, I know you well, but to assure you that you are going to play, you deserve to play as much as any player.”
’He’s a fantastic footballer and has been in his career. „A good thing happened and it surprised me. I think we’ve built a good and respectful relationship,” Pochettino said.
Despite turning 39 next month, Thiago continues to believe his age. His experience, for example, was in stark contrast to that of his partner, Levi Colville. His head coach says it will only benefit the entire team.

When the player is as smart as Thiago who is 38 and almost 39. Do you think he thinks he needs an armband? He is a captain like Rees and Chilwell.
’You don’t need an armband to feel like a captain. He is also the captain. He’s going to help Chilwell and Rees captain the team better.’
