Despite Paul Scholes backing current Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, Erik ten Haag now has three captains.

The Portuguese midfielder picked up the armband on several occasions in the 2022/23 campaign as Harry Maguire battled for a first-team place. So it came as no surprise that he was named full-time captain this summer after the England centre-back was permanently stripped of his honour.

But during United’s first four Premier League games, his leadership credentials were questioned as the team faltered after defeats at Tottenham and Arsenal. However his manager has hit back at critics, arguing that his playmaker’s will and quality make him the ideal choice.

And United icon Scholes, who won 11 Premier League titles with the Red Devils, argued he was the ideal candidate. He also noted that his often dramatic behavior actually underscored his determination.

„When Harry lost his captaincy I knew people were talking about Marcus (Rashford) – I never saw it,” he said on the YouTube show. Five. „Look, I don’t know him in the dressing room, but he wouldn’t be someone who would attack me as captain.

“Bruno has done it, hasn’t he? I think for the first time there are some leaders in the team. You think about the experience they had with the manager they brought in. Varane, World Cup winner, Real Madrid. Casemiro.

„Suddenly there are three or four players in that team who are capable of being captain, and I think Bruno is the right choice because he’s the one they’re all looking up to.”
