The Catholic Church in Papua New Guinea is preparing to host a candlelight vigil on September 6 to welcome Pope Francis and his delegation.
The candlelight service will be the first organized event of the pontiff’s three-day visit, a local newspaper reported.
Held outdoors after sunset, the vigil is open to all and aims to attract Catholics along with members of other Christian denominations.
„Preparation is important to ensure that this visit is a memorable one for us and for the Pope because, at the age of 87, despite health concerns, he has confirmed his desire to visit Papua New Guinea,” said Cardinal Sir John Ribaud. Port Moresby.
The visit serves as both an official state visit and a pastoral mission, underscoring the Pope’s universal recognition of peace, prayer and missionary work.
The Archbishop emphasized that the Pope’s visit to Papua New Guinea brings blessing and hope amid the nation’s ongoing challenges.
Pope Francis is the second pontiff to visit PNG, following Pope John Paul II in 1984 and 1995.
The pontiff will visit the Caritas Technical High School on September 7 for a meeting of street ministry and colon services, where he will meet with clergy, religious leaders and pastors at the Shrine of Mary.
On September 8, the Pope will travel to Vanimo and celebrate the Eucharist. He will then attend a youth rally at the Sir John Guice Stadium before departing on September 9.
