Sergio Reguilon made his Manchester United debut against Brighton on Saturday, but the left-back only joined the club after Burnley turned down an offer to sign him.
Manchester United were only able to complete a deal for Sergio Reguilon on deadline day as Burnley had already turned down an offer to sign him.
Tottenham defender Reguilon has joined United on a season-long loan deal, with a January break clause, as emergency cover at left-back. With Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malaysia out injured, Eric den Haag was desperate to find a replacement and chose Reguilen after rejecting Chelsea’s Mark Cugurella.
He could make his United debut against Brighton on Saturday after being left on the bench for Arsenal’s 3-1 defeat. To land him from Spurs, United agreed to pay Reguillon’s £120,000-a-week wages – something Burnley couldn’t do.
„Left-backs are a bit rare. Look at Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs in world football,” Burnley’s chief operating officer Matt Williams told BBC Lancashire.
„Luke Shaw was injured and they took a player from Tottenham who was offered to us three or four days ago. It was a business decision that we didn’t sign him – salary, loan fees, etc.
United were initially reluctant to sign the left-back in the summer transfer window, but injuries to Shaw and the Malaysian left Den Haag feeling he had no choice. Diogo Dalot filled in against Arsenal, but Reguilon is expected to play against Brighton at Old Trafford a few weeks later at the training ground in Carrington.
„He is a very experienced player, a player for big clubs, a player who has already played a lot of games in La Liga in the Premier League,” Den Haag said earlier this month. „So, he has a good background and we’ve seen him play very serious football, so we’re happy.”

Reguilon is not the only left-back Burnley have failed to land. The Lancashire club, currently bottom of the Premier League, were keen to sign Chelsea’s Ian Matson following an impressive loan spell at the club during their Championship-winning campaign, with the 21-year-old falling through. Old shows from earlier seasons.
„We were there for Ian Matson, we were very keen at the start of the window,” said Williams. „Then he went on tour with Chelsea and did well. But they came to us and said they were ready to do a permanent deal – not a loan.
One of the standout kits of the new season, the adidas shirt’s base color is green with white stripes and maroon stripes, giving United one of the most attractive shirts in the game for the 2023/2024 campaign.
„We agreed everything, but the player was training with the first team and the manager told him he had a bright future at Chelsea. So he decided to stay there and give his hand at Chelsea. We fully respect that and Vincent.” [Kompany] Understood.”
