Innovative Floating Marshes Clean Up Polluted Lakes – A Green Planet

Each 4-foot by 6-foot mat represents the size of a full-sized mattress and can be joined together to create larger clusters capable of treating extensive water areas. These systems have been installed in Nagtaha for nearly two years, forming five clusters of eight sites each, and have significantly reduced harmful chemicals in lake water.

Small Earth Nepal, along with collaborators in India and Bangladesh, has been instrumental in deploying this technology across South Asia, demonstrating the potential for widespread use. Their efforts include rigorous testing and adaptations to ensure the longevity and performance of these floating wetlands.

Dr. Pradhanang’s initiative not only cleans water, but also converts waste into a valuable resource, providing a double benefit. The sites are particularly striking due to their selection of plants such as Indian shot and scarlet sage, which bloom into beautiful flowers that add aesthetic value to the once gray waters.

Despite the clever use of local waste, the addition of materials such as Styrofoam raises concerns over microplastics. However, the environmental and health benefits of reduced water pollution are considered to outweigh these potential risks. These systems represent a new way of dealing with pollution that can be replicated in other water bodies facing similar environmental challenges.
