Fire breaks out at Tiffany’s landmark store – WWD

PLACE IN LANDMARK: Tiffany & Co. A fire broke out Thursday morning at the recently renovated Midtown flagship.

The New York City Fire Department received a call at 9:38 a.m. and crews were dispatched to 727 Fifth Avenue at East 56th Street. According to an NYFD spokesperson, there were no injuries.

A transformer caught fire in an electrical box on the street. Multiple NYFD units are on scene investigating and inspecting surrounding properties.

The LVMH-owned company unveiled what it considers its „landmark” store in late April, following two years of extensive renovations to transform it into one of Manhattan’s top tourist attractions. At 110,000 square feet, Landmark is one of the world’s largest single-brand luxury stores in accessories, apparel and jewelry. As of 2019, the store ranked as the fifth most popular tourist attraction in New York City.

A media request to Tiffany’s was not immediately returned Thursday morning.

A fire broke out in the early hours of the morning for many area workers. Photos from Thursday morning’s fire show black smoke billowing from the store and clouding the crowded sidewalk. It was not immediately clear how many engines and firefighters were called to the scene, and whether the building had been evacuated yet.

The tony address that Audrey Hepburn famously peeked out of its street-front windows in the 1961 movie „Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is a hub of luxury shopping, office buildings and galleries in Manhattan. Bergdorf Goodman’s has two nearby locations, as well as Chanel, Dior, Harry Winston and others. LVMH bought Tiffany in 2021 for $15.8 billion, the largest deal ever made in the luxury market. The luxury conglomerate has invested heavily in rebranding with the help of celebrities like Beyoncé and Jay-Z. Millions have been invested in offering more and improved products, and the renovation of the Peter Marino-designed flagship store is a cornerstone of those efforts.
