Most recently, IRCC invited 3,200 applicants in a category-based selection draw for French scholarship on July 8.

Another PNP-only draw was held on July 2 and 920 candidates with a CRS score of 739 were called.

CRS scores for PNP-only Express Entry tracks will be higher than average as Express Entry candidates who are successfully nominated for PNP will earn 600 CRS points in addition to their existing score. What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is the application management system for three economic immigration programs in Canada: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) and the Federal Skilled Trade Program (FSTP). Each program is a pathway to permanent residency in Canada.

These programs use Comprehensive ranking system (CRS) to evaluate immigration candidates based on human capital factors such as occupation, age, education, language ability and work experience. Each factor receives a score, and the total forms a candidate’s CRS score.

The system was introduced in 2015 as a means for IRCC to speed up processing time for successful applicants. The department has issued a six-month service standard for these applications.

What is Category Based Selection?

Category-based selection launched in 2023, IRCC is a way to further target high-potential Express Entry applicants to help fill urgent gaps in Canada’s workforce or strengthen the population.

To that end, the department introduced six possible categories in 2023 and announced earlier this year that they would remain in place in 2025. They are:

  • Health Professions
  • Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) careers
  • Trade occupations such as carpenters, plumbers and contractors
  • Transportation industries
  • Agriculture and agri-food industries
  • Proficiency in French

Draws for this category are not program specific and permanent resident applicants must be in the Express Entry application pool to qualify.
