Evan Toney will turn Manchester United into Premier League title challengers, says striker's former boss | Football News

Ivan Toney will transform Manchester United into Premier League title challengers, says Peterborough boss Darragh McAnthony.

MacAnthony has been chairman of Peterborough since 2006, including Tony's two-year spell at the club between 2018 and 2020.

Toney has recently been linked with moves to Arsenal and Chelsea and with his contract at the end of next season, Brentford could cash in on the striker.

„Put him in Arsenal, put him in Liverpool or Man United and score 30 Premier League goals in one season,” McAnthony said. Sky Sports.

„I don't think anyone who disagrees with that has seen the last two and a half years.

„I think five clubs in the world could buy him and he would improve any of those clubs by a mile. He makes Manchester United a Premier League challenger.”

When MacAnthony was in charge, Peterborough United were renowned for their brilliant scouting, with Tony a prime example of their success.

The England striker was sold to Brentford at a profit after making 94 appearances and contributing 49 goals for Bosch.

„Having looked at players not just for their technical ability but for their personality and their development over 18 years, I think even though he's 28, he's not even in his prime,” McAnthony said.

„Whoever buys him, £100m will be well spent because he will be in his prime. You're going to get five or six years at best.

„He's scored a goal in every other game in the Premier League for Brentford. Put him in the Aston Villa team under Emery and look at how many goals he's scored in the Premier League. He'll be right up there for the Golden Boot.”

Sky Sports' Sam Blitz and Joe Schradd discuss the possible moves for Ivan Toney should the Brentford striker move as expected in the summer.

Toni's manager Thomas Frank has spoken about his forward's future and believes he will remain at the club, with his contract situation putting his future in doubt.

„I wish he could stay forever, but the reality is he has one year left on his contract,” Frank said.

„He is very open about playing at a better club in the future, so there are some scenarios. He leaves in the summer, he leaves in the winter, or he stays until the end.

„If he ever leaves, it would be fantastic to see him at a great club.”

England captain Gareth Southgate gave Toney his first international start in last week's friendly against Belgium at Wembley, which ended 2-2.

MacAnthony was adamant that Tony would be on the plane to Germany for this summer's Euros.

„Are you kidding me? He's not only one of your best attackers, he's your best defender. You're late in a game, he's the type of player who defends from the front because, just in the corners, he's your best defender,” he said.

„If Gareth Southgate leaves Ivan Toney at home this summer… no comment.”
