Dolly Parton’s rock experiment released two more songs from the country icon’s upcoming full-length rock debut on Friday (June 16). Rockstar. Digging into a song he’s always loved, Barton joined Hearts on Wilson for a live cover of the 1975 jam „Magic Man (Carl’s Version).”
„I’ve always wanted a reason to sing 'Magic Man’ out loud, and it was one of my first choices for the album,” Parton said in a statement. „I was so happy that Ann Wilson agreed to sing with me. No one can sing Ann, but I gave it a really good rendition, and we added some lines that weren’t in the original. We wanted to keep some things that sounded like ours. Thank you, Nancy, for letting me fill it in for you. Thank you both. I hope I’ve done you proud. I think it’s magic!”
In fact, three minutes in, Barton and Wilson trade lines in a new verse to create even more mystery. „A magical man with captivating eyes, changed the course of my young life/ He was a magical man/ I was too quick to learn, I got burned/ Of a magical man,” they sing. „Unless you’ve loved a mystic, no one else can understand.”
Parton’s first rock album is due out on November 17 and will feature 30 songs, including 21 covers and nine originals. One of the new songs dropped on Friday, „Pycones,” featuring Judas Priest singer Rob Halford and Motley Crue bassist Nicky Six and touring guitarist John 5.
Barton said in the statement that „Pycones” is one of her favorite songs from the album. „This song fits so many couples and combines my voice with my all-time favorite rap, it’s even more special,” he and the leatherbound metal yowler said of the midtempo rocker that combines their sugar and spikes. „Sorry, sorry / How long do you have to punish me / Why can’t we move on / Let bygones be bygones / But you never will,” they sing in the chorus. Both songs were preceded by Barton’s first single, „World on Fire,” which hit No. 1 on the Billboard Rock Digital Songs chart last month.
