Delta Air Lines said Monday it will bring its premium economy service to Continental flights in September, its latest effort to boost sales of higher-priced tickets to customers seeking more space and privileges.
Premium economy is a relatively new type of service that major airlines offer on long, often international flights. It sits between first or business class and the rest of economy, and can command a ticket price twice as high as regular coach.
Delta and its rival United have been in an arms race to deck out planes with more premium seats, upgrade lounges and sell more rewards cards by tapping into high-spending travelers while airfares decline overall. JetBlue Airways said its turnaround plan this year will focus on profitable ways to offer its mint business class cabin. Even Southwest Airlines, under pressure to boost revenue, is breaking with its decades-old business model and considering more expensive seats on its planes.
Ticket revenue from Delta’s main cabin rose 4% to $5.4 billion in the first quarter, while premium product revenue rose 10% to $4.4 billion.

Delta customers who purchase standard economy tickets can pay to upgrade to premium economy on Continental flights.
Delta’s Medallion Elite members of its loyalty program are eligible for complimentary upgrades to what’s called Delta Premium Select, but they can also list upgrades to its top-tier Delta One product on those flights.
Some of Delta’s flights on some routes have premium economy seats, but the carrier does not offer accompanying amenities such as kits, noise-canceling headphones, full meals and blankets. The seats were sold as extra legroom tickets, below premium economy.
Some American Airlines short-haul domestic flights operate a similar model, featuring lie-flat seats, but not the premium service offered on international flights.
