Even without a script, Ayo Edebiri gets laughs with his honesty.
Edebiri, who plays Sydney Adamu in the FX drama „The Bear,” won best actress in a comedy at the Golden Globes on Sunday night.
Taking the stage in a red strapless Prada gown, Edebiri jumped in gratitude as she began her acceptance speech.
„I'm very grateful for this. I'm in a room full of people that I admire and whose work has lifted me up,” Edebiri said. .”
Caught up in the emotion of her victory, the 28-year-old actress and author gave an enthusiastic shout-out to the supporters in her life, including her family and the cast of „The Bear.”
„Everyone on 'The Bear' is my family. I love you guys so much. It's been an honor to work with you and grow with you,” Edebiri said before quickly interjecting, „Oh my gosh, even my co-nominated actors. Ah! My real family too. I love you too guys.
Edebiri also offered a playful but heartfelt thank you to „all my agents and managers assistants”.
„(To) the people who respond to my emails, you're all real. Thank you for responding to my crazy, crazy emails,” Edebiri said. „If I forgot to thank you, I'm sorry, unless you're wrong or something.”
Besides „The Bear,” Edebiri starred in the 2023 teen comedy „Bottoms” alongside Rachel Sennot and Havana Rose Liu. He also worked as a writer on the 2022 FX horror comedy „What We Do in the Shadows.”
When asked in the Globes press room if women are becoming empowered in the comedy genre, Edibri was optimistic.
„I hope studios start hearing that audiences are smart, and I think both 'The Bear' and 'Bottoms' are works that don't underestimate the intelligence of the audience,” Edebiri said. „'Bear' doesn't underestimate people's depths, like feeling and understanding and empathy, and 'Bottoms' we think, 'No, people will be as silly as possible with us and have a good time. . .'”
